Help me give my students the opportunity to explore non-fiction titles while allowing them to monitor their own reading by their reading levels.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My beautifully amazing first graders are on fire for reading. They are from diverse backgrounds and love sharing about their cultures and families. Each one of them knows the exact genre they enjoy. They are so enthralled with non-fiction topics such as Martin Luther King Jr., Community Workers, and anything to do with animals. They love sharing out what they have read and look forward to writing about what they read and then presenting their thoughts on stage. They often ask for topics that I do not have in our classroom library. They are patient and kind. They are so excited at the thought of having new books for our classroom.
My Project
“Can we read right now?” is one of the first questions my first graders ask when they walk in the door. We have been focusing on community workers, authors and current events.
Dolphins, Fireman, Penguins, oh, my!
My students have such a passion for reading and love exploring many non-fictions topics. We are at an at risk school and our non-fiction selection is limited. We would love to fill our library with an array of current topics that they can explore daily and allow them to monitor and access books at their current reading level. They are now monitoring their own fluency and it will encourage them to do so for years to come.
