My Students
I teach 25 wonderful and unique students ranging in age from 6-to 8. There is a wide variety of needs in my classroom. I have 3 students that don't speak English and 5 students with special needs. These students learn best through visual aids and hands-on materials. As a first-year teacher, I would be incredibly grateful for any classroom supplies so I can help my students succeed. Most of the supplies I have gotten will be used when we break into small groups, based on the student's math and reading levels. The school I work at focuses on building the whole student: strong minds, healthy bodies, and character traits. Many parents are impressed by the healthy body aspect of the school. We incorporate many movement breaks into our lesson. Many students who go to this school have ADHD. Wiggle seats will help these students make it through lessons where they need to sit.
My Project
With 25 students in a small classroom, flexible seating will allow my students to be more comfortable. When students are comfortable, they can focus on listening and learning. Their bodies need to wiggle. It is not developmentally appropriate to expect students to sit still all day. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They are more engaged and get more work completed than when they are just sitting in a hard chair.
The pandemic has had a big impact on students.
Many of our students did Kindergarten online or skipped kindergarten completely. 70% of the first graders at our school tested below grade level in reading. The books I currently have in my classroom are too difficult for my students to read. The literacy supplies I have chosen will help these students show their potential.
