First Graders Love Science Books!

My students need 73 science books, such as "Whales", "The Seasons of Arnold's Apple Tree", and "My Five Senses" and response journals to use in independent reading centers.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Bustetter's classroom raised $1,019

My Students

First graders love to read science books! Most of my students come from homes where there are not a lot of children's books available. Also, most of them do not have opportunities to visit museums or explore materials that would expose them to the world of nature and science.

My students are budding readers, writers, mathematicians, and scientists!

They are eager to learn and to explore the world around them. They especially enjoy reading nonfiction science books. My students attend a science, technology, and math magnet school. Over 75% of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Due to their lack of reading resources and background experiences at home, many of my students are considered "at risk" for future academic success. I try to level the playing field for my students by providing activities and resources at school that will boost their chances for success

My Project

I am requesting a variety of science picture books, leveled readers, and read-alongs that will support my students' reading, writing, and science learning. The books will enable us to extend science learning into our daily reading block. The books cover the science strands that we teach in first grade. I can use many of the books during our whole group reading time as I demonstrate comprehension strategies that good readers use. Students will then be able to practice these comprehension strategies as they independently read the leveled science books I have requested. Since these leveled books are written for early readers, they will also be able to practice using the high-frequency words and phonics patterns they are using. Students can also take the books homes to practice reading to their parents. They will use the composition journals to write about what they learn as they read and to demonstrate their growing science vocabulary.

These books will expose my students to a wide range of science topics.

They are beautifully illustrated books that will appeal to young children. My students will grow in confidence as readers as they read the books at school and at home with their families. I know these books will help inspire a life-long love of learning in my students and will motivate them to learn more about the world around them. And who knows, maybe they will be inspired to be our scientists of the future!
