First Graders Love Phonics Games!

My students need phonics games to keep them engaged and having fun while learning new reading skills.

My Students

Help us learn how to read! Phonemic awareness games will help us to practice our reading skills and have fun at the same time.

My students are wonderful!

Most of my students live within a few blocks of the school, a very diverse neighborhood, containing large African American, Asian American, Hispanic, and Caucasian populations. My school is a title one school, and over 80 percent of students at my school qualify for free or reduced lunch. At least two have gang members in their family, and some have parents in prison. Some of my students have two parents, some have one, and some live with grandparents. Some of my students have many books at their house, and some have no books at all. Almost half of my students are English language learners, two have individual education plans, and one student in our emotionally and behaviorally disturbed classroom comes to my class for many academic subjects.

My Project

Because of Donors Choose, my class recently received 14 amazing reading games. They are a hit! We have learned to be kind to each other, take turns, and have fun together while learning new reading skills and cementing old ones. We have learned sight words, vocabulary, comprehension, some phonics skills, and grammar through these games. Next year, I will be teaching first grade (I now teach second grade), and my classroom does not have games that teach phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is an incredibly important skill for first graders to learn to read. The games that I am requesting for my class are new and colorful, work for students at a variety of levels, can be played by students independently, and encourage the use of manipulatives to deepen their understanding of language. My students would love them!

If you are generous enough to fund phonemic awareness games for my students, you will help 25 youngsters to be kind to one another and share while reviewing and learning the reading skills that are required for first graders.
