This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love to read, especially non-fiction books. But most non-fiction books are written for students who are reading on a much higher level than mine. I want them to be able to actually READ the books they get so excited about, and that's what this grant is all about!

My students are incredibly challenged, mostly Hispanic or African American, from a highly economically- and socially-challenged neighborhood in NE Denver.

They have a great deal of behavior issues and most are more than a full year behind academically. My goal for these sweet, innocent kids is to help close the achievement gap that these students face every day, to help empower them to be lifelong learners and high achievers.

My Project

I am requesting non-fiction book sets that are leveled by skill and ability, and are designed for First Grade. Students use these leveled books to practice fluency on their own level, or work on a level above theirs to practice applying strategies to problem solve words and and comprehension. It is incredibly difficult to find books, especially non-fiction books, and these sets are just perfect for my First Graders!

This is a really essential project for my class.

We absolutely need leveled books in order to teach and learn, and having high-interest, real-world texts that students can meaningfully engage with would be truly powerful. I hope you'll find it in your heart to help these young readers with a donation! Thank you for considering us!
