This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Listening to books on CDs is a total hit among my first graders. Currently, we have about 6 audio books and students are begging for more. It excites me to see them enthusiastic about books but unfortunately we have no funds to purchase more
I have 28 first graders who love school.
We are a Chicago Public School with less and less resources every year. We are a Title 1 school with wonderful families who value education. Some families have more than one job making it difficult to read to their children every night. For this reason, I immerse my students with literature throughout the school day. I also have students with learning disabilities in my classroom who struggle with comprehending stories. I have noticed that they are better able to understand stories when they listen to them on audiobooks. Overall, my first graders are becoming more confident readers everyday and I want to maintain that eagerness through books.
My Project
Students will use audio books in the listening center daily. They will use portable cd players to listen to stories and follow along with text independently. I want to provide them with as many opportunities as possible to hear fluent reading as school might be the only time they experience it. I have selected books they are highly interested in because this will maintain that eagerness for reading. For example, I chose various Disney themed audiobooks because I can see them oozing with excitement.
These audiobooks will be another tool used in the classroom to help my students become fluent readers.
In addition, these audiobooks will keep a high interest in reading as they are books my students really want to get their hands on. More importantly, there is nothing more rewarding than to see my students' eyes light up and engagement when listening to stories.
