Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first-graders are ready for another amazing year! First-graders have a passion and desire for learning that is insatiable. They are incredibly motivated and surprise me each year with how active they can be in their own learning.

By the middle of the year, I have witnessed first graders running their own learning groups and partnerships during reading, writing, and math instruction.

Each year, I am more and more amazed at how involved and independent 6 and 7-year-olds can be when it comes to their education.

My students are from Los Angeles, California. Our school is a Title I school with 97% of students receiving free or reduced-rate lunch. The school is rich in culture, community, love, and support. Unfortunately, sometimes it is hard to get my hands on all the materials and resources I would like for my classroom and students.

My Project

I want to provide my students with engaging, fun materials that will motivate them to be active participants during lessons. My students will be utilizing many of these materials on a daily basis during small and whole-group instruction. The math centers will be used as students work in independent math groups so that I can focus on meeting with small groups for targeted math instruction. The flip and read sight word sentences and word family dice will be used during student-ran literature stations so that I can focus on running guided reading groups. The ready to write prompt cards will be used during independent writing time for students who finish their work early or need some additional support getting started on writing. Lastly, the math cards and teaching charts will support students in whole-group instruction by providing scaffolds and graphic organizers within reading, writing, and mathematics instruction.

Ultimately, I believe that these materials will foster a more engaging and hands-on learning environment.

I hope that my students will discover that math, reading, and writing can be fun! I hope this project will improve my students' lives by providing them with a strong foundation so that they will develop into successful and independent readers, writers, and mathematicians.
