Help me give my students books to start discussing racism and by showing them that racism is not welcome here, as we build a library that allows us to imagine and strive for a different future.
My students are very hard working and excited to learn every day. They have one year under their belt, so now they can jump right into learning. They come from all around the world and have a variety of life styles and learning needs. With a high poverty level, many of my students face multiple challenges both in and out of the classroom. First graders need a safe, comfortable learning environment to do their best work.
They are constantly striving to do their best and are learning to appreciate and value individual needs of each person that walks through our door.
With what the world is going through now, school will look very different. The kids are worried, stressed and unsure what school will be like. We want to make them feel as safe as possible. It is going to be important for these kids to know that they are loved and we are here for them near or far and we have their best interests in mind.
My Project
These books will build a library where kids will be able to learn about different cultures and be proud of who they are and what they are capable of doing in the future.
First grade is a foundation for many and plants seeds that will forever shape students as learners and citizens.
I intend to create learners that are ready to seek justice, understand where the world has come from and and where it is going next.
As a teacher, I realize I am not doing enough to have students understand more about racism and how we need to shut it down. These books will be a great first step in the right direction!
