My Students

Man, I love where I teach and the amazing students I get to work with each year. My school is a unique public school where students come from all over to attend. Students are chosen through a lottery process to make sure our classrooms are balanced with students representing all races, cultures, and socioeconomic levels. We have students representing neighborhoods from around our school as well as the surrounding school districts.

Each year I am amazed at how energetic and creative my first graders are.

They are thinkers who have a love of learning and all they need is the right environment and tools to thrive. This project will get families even more involved with their child's learning to show students how much their families value learning as well.

My Project

The materials needed for this project are books... LOTS and LOTS of books! These books will be the key component in take-home science bags. This bag will include science tools as well as suggested plans needed to learn about a particular topic with the purpose of getting the students to use their science vocabulary along with their literacy & math skills at home with their families.

This project will get my first graders investigating, experimenting, asking questions, and so much more at home.

My goal is that these bags will spark more questions and will encourage students to explain their thinking to their families.

I am also hopeful that this project will build our students' confidence when discussing science content at school. As a school, our students' social-emotional development has been a focus this year. In order to build academic vocabulary and content knowledge, exposure is key.

These take-home science bags will be another way to have fun with science while being exposed to a wide variety of content and vocabulary, even subjects that are not in first grade standards. This project will support all first-grade classrooms. Please help me get science in the hands of ALL first graders at Henderson. LET'S SPARK CURIOSITY!
