My Students

Research proves that children learn best when doing "hands-on" activities, rather than from a text book. I would like my students to be able to watch the life cycle of a butterfly in the classroom. As they observe changes day by day, it will be something that they'll remember by experiencing it!

My twenty-seven students are a wonderfully diverse group of first graders.

They have different cultural backgrounds and different abilities. We are a Title I inner city school. One thing that is the same for all of students is that they're eager to learn and they love to do science experiments! My class truly learns by doing. This group particularly loves animals!

My Project

To actually observe a butterfly laying its eggs is a thing of beauty! With the larvae and food that I've ordered, the children will be able to see the life cycle. We already have a butterfly netting from donorschoose. The adult butterflies will lay eggs on the mallow plants. The children will then observe the next generation of caterpillars metamorphosis into chrysalis and then new butterflies! This gives the children a clear picture of an animal life cycle.

I have done this project for the past five years with my first graders.

This experience always gives the classroom a sense of buzzing excitement throughout the spring! Without your support, these materials will not be available due to drastic cuts to the budget! This is something that the children will remember for a lifetime. We end the project by walking to a local park and releasing the butterflies. I believe that such an experience is even more important to students who live in the city.
