Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Science was one of the most exciting classes when I was a child. We would conduct lab experiments and create new things! It was always hands-on and exploratory! My students do not have ANY science materials so they lack all the exciting opportunities that they could experience in science class.

I teach first grade and have 26 students in my class.

I work in an urban school system in Illinois. The majority of my students speak English as a Second Language. All of my students are minorities and come from low-income families. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch at school. Our school is currently on academic probation and budget cuts were made this year limiting many academic opportunities. My students are hardworking, full of energy, and curious about the world around them.

My Project

My students need science materials to enhance their science curriculum. Currently we are learning about rocks and minerals. I am asking for books on rocks and sets of different kinds of rocks with magnifying glasses. Next quarter they begin studying life science. I am asking for books on the food chain and life cycles of plants and animals, as well as a plant growing kit. The use of these materials would help them better understand these concepts as well as give them concrete, hands-on activities that will allow them to make their own discoveries!

I'm only allowed to teach science 3 times a week for 20 minutes a day, 1 hour a week.

During that time I want my students to be actively engaged in their learning. I want to promote inquiry, curiosity, and fascination with the world of science, aiding their future schooling experiences to come. Our future needs young minds to become inspired to pursue careers as scientistic, such as Geologists, Archaeologists, Botanists, or Zoologists. The first steps to that inspiration begins in the classroom.
