My Students

My first grade scientists love the experiments, open ended investigations, and science writing that we are doing in our classroom! However, we do not have the materials to keep up our highly engaging science work for our next science units.

My students are wonderful!

Most of my students live within a few blocks of the school, a very diverse neighborhood, containing large African American, Asian American, Hispanic, and Caucasian populations. My school is a Title One school, and over 80 percent of students at my school qualify for free or reduced lunch. Some of my students have two parents, some have one, and some live with grandparents. Some of my students have many books at their house, and some have no books at all. Almost half of my students are English language learners, and some have individual education plans.

My Project

My first graders love science. Twice a week, we break in to three groups and rotate between open science explorations, writing about science, and doing an experiment with me. It is one of our favorite times of the week. My class has three science center boxes, and we have learned a lot and enjoyed working with them. We are about to start a new unit on organisms, and we need materials to experiment with. Please help us to get more science boxes!

In schools with nearly 90% of children living in poverty, there is a big push to focus on reading and math.

I need to make the time that we are able to do science count for my kids. My children love the real experiments that they are able to do with the science kits that we have. Please help us with our next science units by funding this project!
