This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Title I charter school serving a diverse range of students in fully inclusive classrooms.

Our school focuses on Project Based Learning with a real-world connection.

A high percentage of our students come from homes where English is a second language. We have a high percentage of students who receive free and reduced-price lunch. Our teachers design projects that go across multiple content areas. Projects are designed to allow for collaboration, critique and revision. We believe students are engaged in learning when their voices and choices are respected.

My Project

Our first graders will learn about puppetry, then design and create their own sock puppets. They will work in small groups to brainstorm and write puppet stories. Finally, they will perform their stories using their handmade sock puppets.

Puppetry gives children a new form of self-expression: a puppet can be anything the child imagines, from a pet to a monster to a new best friend.

By writing their own stories, they will learn critical story elements (character, setting, problem and solution), and story sequencing (beginning, middle and end). Writing and performing helps support language development, which is helpful for all our early readers (especially those learning English as a second language).
