Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My first grade students are 6-7 years old. They relish learning and discovering new things. The majority of my students are English language learners whose parents often do not speak or comprehend English. A few of my students are native English speakers. They often have minimal access to books and resources that promote academic and social development in their home settings. Once they enter primary school, they realize they are part of a community that promotes learning, laughter, challenges, and successes. Students commit to becoming lifelong explorers and cultivators of knowledge and learning.
My Project
In order to help my students maintain a safe and healthy distance from and avoid close contact with one another, I need to maintain projections from a laptop onto our projector screen. However, our classroom only has one working computer and there are times when I need to disconnect the computer from the projector to complete other tasks. My students need visual references (correct spelling of words, sketches, steps to solve addition and subtraction problems, etc.) in order to be successful.
Many of my students cannot see or discriminate print that is written on our wall sized dry erase boards.
They constantly get up from their seats in order to copy words or to look at visuals. Students have had an easier time viewing work samples and visuals that are housed on a laptop and projected onto a screen. Having a second laptop or computer in the classroom will enable me to continuously show work samples and visuals and allow students to watch science, health, and social science videos throughout the day.
