Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in Manhattan. Most of the students in my class are English Language Learners. 80% of the students in my school qualify for free lunch. The students are eager to learn and have a strong desire to learn to read.

Our reading and writing curriculum requires that the teacher work with small groups, while the rest of the class works independently. I am the only teacher in the room, and my tentative class list has 25 students on the roster. My classroom does not have activities that first graders can work on without a lot of supervision and instruction. New York City will be cutting the school budget this year and these items are not included in the budget.

My students need a set of Sentence Match-Ups for colors, simple words and number words. This will give the children lots of hands on sentence building practice. Each 2 piece puzzle has a subject on one side and a predicate on the other. There are 60 puzzle altogether that can be done independently, even in September! Students can also feel successful when working on the Word Work Centers. Together they contain 200 foam letters and 80 double sided cards that can be used by beginners and also more advanced students. This activity can be used from September until June, because it has two levels of difficulty.

Your generosity will allow the children in my class to learn important sight words and complete sentences. Your help will enable them to learn to be independent from the very beginning of the year. This sets up excellent work habits for school. As the students' confidence increases, it will allow me to work with the small groups and give each child the attention that they need.
