This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the fun you had in first grade singing, laughing, and learning? I believe that learning can be fun! When children are engaged in singing and reading, they enjoy it so much that they don't realize how much they're learning!
I teach a very culturally diverse group of wonderful first graders in an inner city school.
My students come to my classroom with all different skill levels. Some are non-readers and others are already on the way to becoming fluent readers. What they have in common is an eagerness to learn and to sing! All of my students are eager to learn, but with severe budget cuts, it's difficult to replace equipment when it breaks and books when they tear.
My Project
I was thrilled to discover this terrific product! It includes 40 colorful cards that each feature a popular song. It's sure to get the whole class singing and moving—from “Wheels on the Bus” to “Five Little Ducks”—with easy-to-follow lyrics on one side, and the title and a helpful picture on the other. They’ve also included a handy stand to hold each card in place, so kids’ and teachers’ hands stay free to act out each song! There are Cd's that go along with each card. I also was thrilled to find 20 original songs covering the months of the year, the alphabet, numbers, seasons and more—each printed on a giant-sized poster that invites the whole class to sing along! We also need a CD player in order to play these wonderful songs so that the children can read along as they sing! My class also needs a set of 4 copies of the book "When Sophie Gets Angry", as well as the CD. This is a book that I use every year in my curriculum. The classroom copy is very worn and needs replacement.

Whether students are emergent readers or more advanced, they universally love to sing! You can help my class start out the day with a song and a smile! Students won't even realize that they're learning new sight words as they're following along! The cd player and books will be a wonderful addition to our listening center.
