This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 23 eager first graders in an inner city school. Located in a high-need community, our mostly Latino students work hard to compete with students in more affluent neighborhoods.
My students have mastered sounding out words and recognizing sight words, but we lack materials to help improve reading fluency and speed. Studies have shown that with fluency comes comprehension. This improves confidence as students continue to tackle more challenging books! We do not have any materials that focus on choral reading, echo reading and modeled reading.
My class needs Partner Fluency Reading Reading to improve vocabulary, recognition, reading comprehension, reading with pacing, intonation and expression. They also need Fluency Skills Charts for modeled reading, choral reading and echo reading. These charts also come with matching reproducibles for individual student practice. The Building Fluency Card Bank improves pacing, speed and word recognition. With cuts to the school budget these materials will not be available without your generosity.
Your kindness will enable my students to read several genres including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. They will hear and practice how to read with fluency, intonation and pacing. The kits contain cd's, charts and reproducibles that will make my students the best readers that they can be! You will empower my students to have materials to improve their reading that is otherwise unavailable to them.
