This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In September I will be teaching 26-28 first grade students at an inner city Title I school. 80% of the students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. I have already met most of my students who are currently in Kindergarten at my school. They are eager learners who are very excited about coming to first grade!
The listening center box (into which the headphones get plugged) broke this '08-'09 school year. The item was used for many years and succumbed to much wear and tear from student use. Whenever students wanted to listen to books on tape or cd, it had to be played out loud. This was distracting to the rest of the class. Many times I could not allow students to go to the listening center for this reason.
My class needs 2 listening center boxes (to plug in the headphones) 8 headphones, and a cd/cassette player. This will enable 2 groups of 4 students (reading different book levels) to be at the listening center. This type of reading is highly motivating to students because they can feel successful from the first day of school as they follow along with the words in print. This is wonderful for readers and non-readers alike! My students will also benefit because with a large class, the listening center can keep all students engaged in learning.
You will make it possible for my class to have a working listening center that does not disrupt other students. The headphones will allow students to listen to books without disrupting other children. The extra set of headphones and box will allow students at differing levels of ability to work at the same time.
As equipment breaks down, the school is unable to replace it due to severe budget cuts. Without your support, I will have to turn students away from the listening center because it distracts the other students because it must be played aloud since the box broke.
