First Grade Meets : Jada Jones and Donavan's Words

Help me give my students first grade chapter books that are empowering and full of dynanic vocabulary and ELA story elements so that we can complete puffy books as our culminating activity for reading comprehension class.

My Project

Bringing the chapter books Jada Jones and Donavan's Word Jar into our 1st-grade classroom as read-alouds will inspire my young learners to explore themes of friendship, identity, self-expression, and problem-solving through relatable and engaging stories. These books feature diverse characters who navigate real-life challenges and emotions, allowing my students to connect with the characters personally while expanding their vocabulary and comprehension skills.

The goals for this project are: (1) to develop oral reading fluency and listening comprehension through daily interactive read-alouds, (2) to promote critical thinking and empathy by engaging students in literature circles that encourage peer discussion and diverse perspectives, and (3) to celebrate students’ understanding and creativity with a culminating “Reading Comprehension Puffy Book” where each student will design a visual and written reflection of their favorite character or chapter.

Literature circles are critical because they empower students to take ownership of their reading journey, enhance social-emotional skills, and provide a structured yet flexible way to deepen comprehension and connection to text.

My students are unique because they are curious, creative, and always eager to learn in ways that reflect their unique personalities and needs. Through these stories, students will participate in literature circles where they take on meaningful roles such as connector, illustrator, word wizard, and discussion leader—promoting both collaboration and confidence as readers and thinkers.
