"Math might not teach us to add love or subtract hate but it gives us hope that every problem has a solution."
Teaching math is a passion of mine.
I am so thankful to have the chance to teach not just my 20 first graders but also my partner teacher's 20 kiddos as well. I love having the opportunity to watch 40 six and seven year olds become mathematicians and thinking outside the box to solve problems.
Together, we are learning that math can be messy and that by sharing our smart thinking with others we become better problem solvers. My students love coming up with creative ways to show their thinking with others through the use of manipulatives, written expressions, models, and drawing illustrations. We share our thinking with others during partner activities, whole group time and small groups. I love watching them make the connection that math is a part of their lives every day.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will allow my first grade mathematicians to share their smart thinking quickly and for all to see. This will allow students not only the opportunity to share but also to learn from others and their thought processes when working through a variety of math problems throughout the school year.
The table and markers will be used on a daily basis and while math is the primary focus of having this table, it will also be used throughout the school day for reading a writing activities.
Students will love being able to write their thinking on the table.
