This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am always in admiration of the perseverance and grit I see in my students and their families. Our school community is a lovely group of hard-working people who come together to create and provide the best we possibly can for our kids. While some families may not have the ability to provide things like books and art supplies for their kids in their homes, they are providing love and strong family bonds for them. I am so lucky to arrive each day at a job I love, with smiling kids whose parents support and value education in the ways that they can.
My students deserve access to the same materials and opportunities that students in more affluent areas receive.
Our school is a Title I school, and most of my students participate in the free lunch program. Many of our students are second language learners and struggle academically and quite a few reside in homeless shelters and foster homes.
My students always benefit from hands-on learning and also from using different strategies and methods to solve problems. Being able to provide hands-on learning with important tools like these Addition Machines and Subtraction Machines and manipulative counters to demonstrate understanding will be an essential key to helping my students build strong number sense at an early age which will set them up for math success throughout the grades.
