First Grade Loving: Flexible Seating, Books, and STEM Bins

Help me give my students flexible seating options (including bungee dish chairs, wobble chairs, and ball chairs), engaging science nonfiction books, STEM bins, headphones, and whisper phones!

My Students

I teach 56 energetic, sweet, happy first graders in a Dual Immersion program. These students spend half of their day in my class (the English side) and the other half of the day in the Spanish classroom. I truly believe that when students love coming to school in the early years, it will leave a lasting impact on the rest of their education.

My students deserve to work in a classroom that is text-rich, rigorous in vocabulary, with lots of opportunities for hands-on learning and collaboration.

I want to provide my students with a variety of flexible seating options, engaging materials to learn from, additional nonfiction books to develop a love of reading and enhance our science curriculum, and STEM activity bins to build problem solving skills while studying math, science, and technology.

My Project

The first thing I wanted to include for my students is new flexible seating options. My students are in love with the lapdesks and clipboards in my classroom because they have the ability to work around the room. The wobble chairs, bungee chairs, and ball chairs will give even more students the ability to get some wiggles out as they complete their work. This will increase their focus and help them be excited to come to class and choose their spot for the day.

My students are eager to learn about the world around them and are very inquisitive!

The STEM bins and nonfiction books I selected will give them the opportunity to be scientists and take their learning into their own hands! I also included whisper phones and headphones to help with our read to self and listen to reading centers during guided reading.
