I want the books to help students understand each others unique learning styles. The reading guides, bouncy bands, and light filters will assist not only the students with attention issues but will also assist regular students by presenting a calming space with indirect lighting.
I teach first grade in a low socioeconomic area.
At the beginning of the year, everything is new and exciting. By the middle of the year, some students need extra support to be successful. Everything in this project will directly impact these students. The light filters will also provide a calming environment for the whole class.
My Project
The bouncy bands will help students "get the wiggles out". Some students desperately need something to do in addition to the regular class brain breaks. Some students focus better if they're able to move. This will allow them to do so without disturbing other students.
Print trackers will allow students to better focus on just the line that they are reading. By the end of the year, they should be able to focus without the print trackers.
Trade books will be used to teach students with learning difficulties that it's OK to be different. They will also allow the other students to better understand how hard it is for students with learning issues.
My room is very dark and I only have one light switch. The light covers will allow me to leave the lights on without the glare of bright florescent lighting. This will create a sense of calm immediately when students enter my room.
The requested materials will assist students by providing a healthy outlet for extra energy.
Most of these same students will be able to use the print trackers to keep up better when they are reading without having to put their finger on every word they read. Fluency will increase because students can focus on the words instead of focusing on keeping up with the text.
