Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade students in a low socio-economic community. My students are second language learners and need support to learn and practice language. The families in my community are dedicated to helping their children but many are just learning English themselves.
My students and families work together to learn and practice language at home. The families support their students by attending adult English classes provided by our school. Although parents provide time and support, they are not able to provide the supplies and resources needed to give the children the opportunity to practice language. As a teacher I have purchased books and made games and resources for the students and the classroom, but I am not able to provide everything my students need. Due to cuts in the education budget, I am asking for your assistance to give my students resources to use in the classroom and at home.
As a teacher, I allow my students to check out books from the classroom to read with their families at home. To keep these books in good condition so they can be used as a resource for future classes, I am asking for book bags to transport books to and from school. I enjoy teaching language and reading through song and big books. We need big books and CDs to practice tracking print, re-reading familiar text, and to incorporate science and social studies topics into the curriculum. I also practice reading fluency and set personal reading goals with the students. I am asking for student timers to use when students practice timed reading in pairs. They will use the timers to record and share their accomplishments of personal reading goals using individual graphs.
Your help will ensure that my students have the resources to become successful readers. With your support students will have the opportunity to take books home and work with their families. You will be providing resources that will benefit not only my current students, but several classes to come. Thank you for supporting these students and giving them the opportunity to be successful in school.
