Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in an inner city school in which 80% of the students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Many of the students are English Language Learners, and do not have a lot of learning materials at home. The students are well behaved and eager to learn!

One of the major science goals for first graders is to determine whether items of different materials, shapes, and boat designs will sink or float. The Exploration Kit allows students to make predictions and then test them. It includes several boats with objects to weigh them down, and various materials including cork, a sponge, a pine cone, buttons, a rubber ball and a key. The predictions and outcomes can be written by the students on a write and wipe surface.

The science and math standards require that students sort and describe objects (compare and contrast). The Science Specimens Sorting Center will let the children use their eyes and fingers to investigate the properties of more than 20 specimens, from rocks and shells to feathers and pine cones. The children can sort items by living/non-living, hard/soft, smooth/rough, shiny/dull. This Sorting Center will allow students to master sorting skills for science and math!

Your generosity will enable my students to remain interested in science with these exciting centers. Students need to learn properties of solids, liquids and gases. The Photo Activity cards will bring objects to life. Vocabulary words are on the back of the card. The Science Resource Book contains over 100 activities and experiments that I can use with my first grade students. You can help American students keep up with the rest of the world when it comes to science!
