This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a group of bright first-graders who are ready and eager to learn. The majority are English language learners whose families come from Mexico and Central America, so they have a steep learning curve as they rapidly learn English vocabulary as well as foundational reading and writing skills in their first few years of school.

Additionally, many students come from high-poverty backgrounds with limited access to academic experiences, conversations, and materials at home.

I want to do everything within my power to provide high-quality resources for them in school that will widen their experience and enjoyment and help them to grow in leaps and bounds in their academic achievement!

My Project

This year, we would love to grow our three classes of first grade writers in their experience as AUTHORS! Throughout the year so far, we have been learning to craft engaging texts in the narrative, informational, and opinion genres.

Through ABCYa's Story Maker our students can write their own stories, print them out using the color printer, and bind them into a published book!

Knowing that writing is the most meaningful when it can be shared with an audience, we also want to create opportunities for our young authors to share their books with others. Students will be able to proudly share their new books with peers, younger students, parents, and school staff! Plastic microphones give the students a great opportunity to practice projecting as well. We may even have "signing parties" throughout the year as new audiences come to visit our classroom author parties!
