Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

During art lessons, I have observed students being completely involved and engaged. It is through this learning form that many students get to really demonstrate their creativity and express their feelings. I would like to provide my students with more art experiences in order to give them a chance to explore their skills in these areas. I teach first grade at a school in Los Angeles School District. All of my students (21) are English Language Learners, either in their first or second year in the language. Therefore, their language abilities are very limited and in turn reading and writing is often very difficult for them at this stage of their English development. Art activities provide these students an outlet to explore other content areas. Since so much emphasis is given to language arts and math, the arts rarely receive enough time in the classroom. Another barrier are materials. Art usually requires more materials and preparation. I would like to put forth the effort and preparation and am asking for help in the materials so that I may enhance art activities for my first graders and give them more to be excited for during the school day. Their faces light up every time I mention art and provide them a chance to express themselves in this way. Using State standards in Art, I'd like to plan at least one art lesson a week. I truly feel that these experiences will help my students develop academically, socially, and emotionally.
