Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are new to the school experience and come bringing all the energy and curiosity you could hope for in young scholars. They live in a vibrant city yet too often the enriching experiences that could spark their interests and motivate further exploration and study are denied to them because of socioeconomic factors beyond their control. They are attending school in a neighborhood of East LA. The students are remarkably independent, love to take charge and feel responsibility. They have the capacity to achieve great things and are limited only by what we as adults can make accessible to them. I know all children deserve a world-class education and at KIPP Promesa Prep we are determined to provide that. Whatever it takes!
My Project
All children deserve enriching, exciting, transformative educational experiences. Our scholars are at a disadvantage because they often miss out on enriching experiences (trips to museums, summer camps, travel) that more affluent students enjoy. This includes access to experiences that can spark lifelong interest, such a robotics team. I am going to start our first-ever first grade robotics team to give our young people a chance to explore technology and introduce coding. Some students will have a new interest sparked that will guide their future education and career goals.
Robotics will be introduced in class, working with small groups of students, until the whole class has had an opportunity to interact and explore with the robots and the apps that introduce coding concepts.
After all students have been introduced, the club will have open enrollment. I will communicate with families about the opportunity and encourage as many as are able to join. Depending on interest, the club will accommodate up to 30 students, split into sub-teams of ten so students are always engaged closely with the robots, and keeping a ratio of about 3 students per robot, as recommended by the creators. If interest expands beyond 30, I'll be writing another grant! So excited to explore the world of robots and engage students in meaningful project-based learning.
