Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a second grade GATE class in a low income Hispanic community. My students are ELL's (English Language Learners) and receive free lunch. Additionally, one fourth of my students come from single parent families. Our school has also been ranked as one of the lowest after last year's state test.

I am currently preparing for next school year. It will be my third year teaching, but my second year teaching a GATE class. I quickly learned that students are extremely eager to learn the minute they step into the classroom the first day of school. Thus, it is essential to be prepared. September is just around the corner and I need to make sure that my students have the essentials the minute they walk in. Unfortunately, there are talks of budget cuts in California for next school year. As it is, our supplies at school are limited and with the cuts, it will be much worse. Moreover, parents simply can not afford buying school supplies for their children when housing and gasoline prices are sky rocketing.

I have planned many exciting "getting to know you" activities for the first weeks of school and we desperately need supplies. Every classroom needs the essentials. My future students will need a pencil box to keep their new sharpened pencils and colored pencils in. They will also need erasers and glue sticks. Additionally, they need a classroom sharpener to sharpen their pencils daily. The materials will be used by the students ALL day and ALL year long.

I am hopeful that you can help me accomplish this goal of mine. You might not be there to see their little faces the first day of school as they open their own pencil box, but I can assure you that you will be there each time my students sharpen a pencil, take it to their desk, and express themselves on a sheet of paper. Just as a chef needs pots and pans, my students need their tools.
