My special needs students are vibrant urban teenagers with lots of curiosity about how the "real world" works. We recently visited the Posterhouse Museum and learned how to create printmaking art using Lego Dots, and would love to bring that experience into our classroom to help kids practice their First Amendment right.
Before my students graduate high school it is crucial that they understand their civic rights and responsibilities, and find their Voice! Our First Amendment Project will educate students on that it means to peacefully protest, help students reflect on what causes they find worth protesting, and will be a literacy, civics, and art project rolled-into-one.
Students will first identify a personal cause they feel strongly about (i.e. women's rights, BLM, students' rights etc.) and design a protest sign to support their cause. The kids will use the printmaking supplies like brayers, plexiglass and ink to create protest posters to support their cause. The Lego dots and baseboards can be used to create a raised surface for creating a relief print.
