My students come from a small-town, rural, farming community with various backgrounds and ethnicities. They enjoy many outdoor activities such as fishing, camping, working with animals, and helping their families on the farm. For many of them, reading has become a challenge. I am passionate about helping them overcome roadblocks that hinder their learning and ultimately, I want them to develop a love of reading and become a life-long reader. They come into my room each day ready to learn and work hard.
"In this room, we don't do easy; we make easy happen through hard work and learning."
I teach 10 groups of students each day and as the students line up to leave my room, they repeat this motto with enthusiasm. We have established routines, where we practice skills and strategies the students need to build fluency, vocabulary, and confidence to become successful readers. Their parents are doing a great job interacting and reading with them at home on a nightly basis.
My Project
As the Literacy Interventionist, my goal is to give my students language-rich books to add to their home library to promote literacy outside of school. I teach 10 groups of students from 1st grade to 3rd grade for 30 minutes every day. Each student comes to me with different skills and abilities. I begin each group time around the "campfire" reading either a picture book replete with rhyme and vocabulary or a leveled chapter book. I want them to love reading, but I also want them to become critical thinkers as well.
"A child who reads will be an adult who thinks."
During this time around the campfire, we also make predictions, summarize and make personal connections to the story we are reading in a very relaxed setting. I want this relationship with books and my students to continue beyond the classroom. Many of the books I am asking for have been read at our "campsite" and I would love to get some of these books into the homes of my students. Reading affects more than just grades. It affects the self-esteem of the student, future employment, and their families. Thank you for your consideration.
