My students need Kindle Fire HD tablets for daily practice of Math skills, listening to examples of Reading to enhance their grasp of English, and to discover information about our Science and Social Studies topics.
Our elementary school is situated in an affluent county in Georgia, however the population of this particular school fits into a socio-economic situation below the county average. While schools all around us see growth in math and reading, our setting struggles to maintain and/or make forward progress consistently.
My goal is to foster a love of learning in students, therefore it is imperative that I provide them opportunities to connect with information that they may not experience first-hand.
Making technology accessible is key to meeting this goal: when students wonder 'why?' or 'how?'--they can discover the answers on their own.
The parents of the students at Sedalia Park are loving and hard-working. A significant number of them are not native English speakers and may or may not have had either a full or positive experience on their personal educational path. To change that dynamic, we must offer families guidance about how to use technology safely, and ultimately partnering with them to create a positive and fulfilling educational experience for their children.
My Project
The Kindle Fire tablets that I am requesting will enhance the reading abilities of my classroom which is 60% English language learners. First, they will have access to sites that will model the language as they listen to the books and stories being read. Additionally, they will be able to build the foundation of new sounds and words in English with the apps that offer spelling and vocabulary practice. Finally, Math word problems can be made easier to understand with the option to translate to other languages. All of these options will build much needed self-esteem and confidence.
While these students' experiences may be somewhat limited by financial barriers, their access to and familiarity with technology will inspire students to connect with the world around them.
What is a volcano and how does it work? Why did so many explorers get lost? Who discovered the first dinosaur? Great questions that can be answered using the Kindle Fire 8 tablet--and may lead to even more questions and investigations.
Utilizing every minute of the day for instruction is the task that faces every teacher. Why not offer that instruction in a manner that 'speaks' to this generation, allows for collaboration and discourse, and engages even the least confident among them to participate?! Thank you for helping a special group of students gain confidence and self-worth.
