This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Fractions can be tough to understand, but they don't have to be! With the right tools and a chance to work with fractions in a highly visual, hands-on way, kids can master this math skill without to much sweat and tears (from teachers or parents!).
My students are hard working English language learners from the SW area of Denver.
More than 95% of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch, and many come from challenged or diverse family situations. My class loves coming to school every day, and they take a lot of pride in our school and our room. I want to make sure they have the best tools they need to master the tough academic concepts they face in first grade, which is why I am writing this grant today.
My Project
Our school strives to emphasize the importance of math in everyday life, and I am struggling to make and collect manipulatives that help illustrate what fractions are, and how we use them. This grant is for fraction magnets, self-checking fraction centers, a pizza fraction game, and fraction cubes for games and centers. These tools will help my ELL students be able to practice seeing lots of fractions, as well as help them practice reading them, matching them, building them, and using them to solve problems, all with manipulatives that are fun, easy to use, and have real-world connections!
Understanding fractions is an essential math skill, and one that can be challenging without materials that help lead students towards deeper understanding of the concept.
I hope you will consider donating to this grant to help my class get teaching and learning materials that will help them master the concepts of basic fractions in first grade! Thank you.
