This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My preschool classroom is the first formal learning experience for many of my students. For most they are beginning the work of building a foundation for their educational career. I am a teacher in a small neighborhood school in Chicago.

The students in my class are mostly Black and Latinex, with over half English Language Learners and a third of the students with special needs, such as developmental delay, language deficits and autism.

This year due to the current health crisis, we have been forced to focus more on sanitation and there is very little left in the budget for basic classroom materials. This project seeks to help fulfill the need for classroom supplies so we can provide as close to a normal classroom learning experience as possible, despite what is happening in the world outside.

My Project

Some of the most important foundational skills preschoolers learn are letter identification and beginning symbol writing. In this age of remote learning and high digital engagement, children are missing out on the opportunities to build essential fine motor skills.

The hands on approach to fine motor skills and alphabetic knowledge build through the Learning Without Tears program helps children build the connection between body and mind.

The use of hands-on learning materials and different modalities, such as music and movement, allow children of various abilities and learning styles to strengthen academic skills and fine motor dexterity at the same time.
