This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is in Bridgeport, Connecticut. We are in a high poverty level neighborhood. All students receive free breakfast and lunch, many attend free after school programming too. Many of the students and families speak another language at home.
This is my first full official year as a 2nd grade classroom teacher!
I have been the physical education teacher at this school for the last 14 years. I feel like a first year teacher again! I work in an inclusion classroom, with a special education teacher, two para professionals, and six children who have identified special needs, many of them on the Autism Spectrum.
My Project
My students really need to better develop their fine motor skills, so they can continue to improve their writing. The games will be a fun way for them to practice skills taught in OT in a fun way. Unifix cubes will help them to practice motor skills and give them the visual numbers while completing math. The math center will be much easier for them to manipulate since it is all together and has pockets for them to fill and the math uses Velcro which will be easier for them to manipulate. The magnetic sentence strip holders will allow them to copy from the board with longer time exceptions.
We are working on having the students work together cooperatively, and using puzzles has been very successful.
The students are learning social skills while working together. They have also been enjoying doing weekly crafts, in which we always focus on fine motor.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
