My Project
Prerequisite skills for writing start developing long before children ever pick up a pencil. They need to participate in a variety of activities to develop their hand-eye coordination, hand and finger strength, and fine motor dexterity just to name a few. My students are practicing writing capital letters, but due to their age and short attention spans, this practice takes only a few minutes at a time.
I am requesting materials to offer them play activities that will support their fine motor development and coordination throughout the school day during both structured and unstructured times.
I would like to add hole punchers and stickers to our writing center so that they can access these materials anytime they are working on self-directed writing projects. They often use the writing center materials to play “office” in the dramatic play area. The sand will refill our sensory table where students spend a lot of time using their hands to manipulate, scoop, squish, and roll sand. The dough and ink stampers will provide a new way to practice the alphabet while developing hand-eye coordination and strength. The assortment of different paint brushes will encourage different types of hand, arm, and finger engagement while painting. These materials will also be novel and engaging for my students, giving them a lot more practice than if they were only using standard school supplies for writing.
