Play-Doh, in particular, is an invaluable tool for strengthening fine motor skills.

As children manipulate, roll, squeeze, and shape Play-Doh, they are actively developing the small muscles in their hands and fingers. These are the very muscles essential for tasks like holding a crayon or pencil correctly, cutting with scissors, and ultimately, writing. The tactile feedback and resistance offered by Play-Doh provide a unique sensory experience that helps build hand strength and dexterity in a fun and engaging way.

These art activities, seemingly simple, are powerful facilitators of pre-writing skills. The act of drawing, scribbling, and forming shapes with different materials lays the foundational understanding of lines, curves, and spatial relationships – all critical components of letter formation. By strengthening their fine motor control and developing pre-writing abilities through art, kindergarten students gain the confidence and physical readiness they need to transition smoothly into formal writing instruction.
