Finding the Unknown

My students need hands-on equations to help learn problem-solving and algebraic skills. This program uses hands-on models to demonstrate mathematical concepts.

My Students

Math doesn't have to be boring. The "Waa waa waa" of the teacher from Charlie Brown has no place in the math classroom. To help learn problem solving and algebraic concepts, students need to see, touch, and manipulate to help understand ideas. Let's give them something to put their hands on!

I teach 100 students math.

I try to make it fun, exciting, and memorable. Most of my kids come from blue-collar, low-income families. My kids enjoy anything that makes learning fun. We use music, art, games, projects, and inactive methods to teach. The more novel the method, the more the students remember the idea and the concept. I want to give them something to remember for life.

My Project

Hands-on equations use pieces to show variables, integers, and number concepts. The program starts at a very basic level and moves slowly by introducing concepts that are natural to students. After talking through and manipulating the pieces, students are able to understand the algebraic concepts necessary for problem solving. Only after a lot of practice with the pieces, the students move to pictorial representations, and finally to the abstract.

This program will give the students confidence to tackle mathematical problem solving because it will begin at a very basic level and build on numbers sense slowly.

By starting with a beginning level, the students will understand the meaning behind the math, not just the rote memorization.
