Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a very small town with a population of approximately 2,000 people. We are nestled in the Rocky Mountains and enjoy beautiful views and are surrounded by wildlife. We are hours away from big city life and enjoy life in a simple way.
My students love a challenge, setting goals, and learning how to work together to achieve them.
The students I work with are talented, hardworking, team players, and love learning. I work with a variety of students, including high needs, autistic students learning how to be in the general education setting, and students who are gifted in regards to academics. I have students from many socio-economic backgrounds and coming from homes with different family situations.
This range of diverse students and personalities makes our learning environment a great place to grow from one another's experiences and the students all have different experiences they bring to our classroom. My students are incredible at whatever they set their minds to and surprise me every day with how much they accomplish.
My Project
We all know reading a lot is key to a child's learning. Children enjoy reading new books, learning from them, engaging their imaginations, and building their reading skills. In order to accomplish this, a classroom must have many options that are rich in diversity, content, language, levels, and themes.
With a classroom library that is diverse, accessible, and at their level, my students can engage in books that will not only build their reading skills but will enhance their knowledge of the world around them, and build empathy in their lives.
The books I have chosen help to meet the student's needs in regards to content being taught in the classroom as well as giving students the chance to read about mindfulness, inclusivity, and is relatable to a wide range of students. The books I have chosen include a wide range of themes and levels. This would make sure that there is something that appeals to every student.
I will not just have the books available to read for students in a library setting in my classroom, but I will choose a book each week of the school year, and we will read them together as a class and cultivate classroom discussions, activities, and allow instruction such as writing and social studies to be themed to the book which provides a high level of student engagement.
