Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. My students are all different types of learners and have various backgrounds. I have students who do not speak English, students with disabilities, and some students who are homeless.
I teach at a Title I school in New York where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Many of my students receive food and clothing from the school's charity drives. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.
My Project
In my fourth grade class, my students have spent the last month learning about the Iroquois Native American group. They have learned about their history from the "Birth of the Haudenosaunee" to their culture of oral tradition and the purpose of Wampum belts. Next week we will be starting a new topic and the students are very interested in learning more about the Native Americans.
This book, "Eagle Song," will teach the students that Native Americans are still alive today and they are all around.
The students will be able to relate to the main character, Danny a fourth-grader, who has moved to a big city from the Mohawk reservation. The students can relate to living in a big city and they have learned a lot about the Mohawk reservation which will make this a high-interest book for them to read.
