This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach an amazing group of students with intellectual and multiple disabilities in an urban, inner-city high school. My students range in age from 14 to 22, and each one brings their own unique strengths, challenges, and personality to our classroom community. Despite the obstacles they face, they come to school eager to learn, connect with their peers, and develop skills that will help them succeed both in school and in life.

Every day in our classroom, we begin with Morning Meeting, an important routine that builds communication, social skills, and confidence.

Each week, one student takes the lead, announcing the date, day of the week, month, and the weather (including high and low temperatures). They also present a Question of the Day to the class and go around the room to hear and respond to each student’s answer.

This routine allows us to practice critical skills such as:

*Making eye contact

*Speaking in complete sentences

*Listening attentively

*Asking follow-up questions

However, many of my students have difficulty projecting their voices, which makes it challenging for their peers to hear them. As a result, they sometimes lose confidence or rely on me to repeat their words—limiting their independence.

I am requesting a WinBridge S97 60 W Portable Voice Amplifier with wireless microphones to help my students literally “find their voice.” By using a microphone, they will not only be heard but will also feel a new sense of pride and leadership while running Morning Meeting. Plus, this tool will add an element of fun, making this activity something my students truly look forward to each day.
