Reed High School is located in the Reno/Sparks community. My students’ backgrounds are diverse economically and culturally as reflected across the school which has a 55% minority population. My classes comprise students in their Junior & Senior year in Environmental and AP Environmental Science. The majority of my students live within urban communities and in rental homes or apartments. This limits their opportunities to get outdoors and experience their local wildlife. Many of my students have limited knowledge about the local wildlife and nature.
Outdoor education provides our students with an opportunity to build environmental stewardship and an appreciation for the local natural wildlife communities.
The books we are seeking will allow us to build an outdoor classroom with curriculum and materials needed to help our students succeed. Outdoor classroom education will provide my students the freedom to explore the local environment and build their knowledge of regional flora and fauna.
