Finding Our Best Selves: Flexible Seating for Flexible Learning
My students need Hokki stools, ball chairs, and a TV table set to engage more effectively in their learning. Research shows that children need movement in order to activate some of the most critical areas of the brain for learning.
We are a close-knit, culturally-diverse, community school with just over 300 students, grades K-5. Many of our students come from a lower socioeconomic background, which means we are classified as a school that receives Title I funding.
I have the privilege of working with a remarkable group of learners.
These 4th and 5th graders are inquisitive, enthusiastic, and excited to learn about the world around them. All of my students bring a unique perspective to our classroom community, and are encouraged to learn new things and to take on new challenges.
My goal as a teacher is to create a safe, positive, student-centered learning environment for ALL that enter my classroom. My students have a wide range of academic abilities and learning styles, and I strive to provide them with meaningful learning experiences each and every day
My Project
Research shows that children need movement in order to activate some of the most critical areas of the brain for learning. So why are we asking them to sit still? This year, I have the privilege of teaching a very enthusiastic (and, active!) group of 4th and 5th graders. Indeed, most of my students simply NEED movement!
Our classroom environments should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.
This simply cannot be done when kids are sitting in rows of desks all day! Flexible seating gives students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them and helps them engage in ALL of the above…
In our learning community, students are encouraged to choose the seating option that allows them to be their “best self.” The goal is for students to identify the best seating arrangement for their individual needs. Making these personal choices, based on knowing themselves as learners, is a great experience in trust and independence. Flexible seating empowers student choice, increases student engagement, and improves student participation.
The addition of Hokki stools, folding tables, and stability balls to our classroom will add to our flexible seating options, allowing students even greater choice in their learning. These new additions will certainly benefit even the most active students in my classroom this year, and will continue to support students in my class for years to come.
Thank you, in advance, for considering this project!
