Eighty-seven percent of my students are from low-income households and many of them have to use public trains and buses just to get to school. Some even travel over an hour each way. My students are making an active decision to better their education by attending our school.
Our school is an honors for all high schools, meaning that each of my students is in honors-level courses.
Not only do we cover honors-level material, but we expect our students to participate in labs, activities, and think beyond the standard curriculum.
My Project
Students need assistance with social emotion learning and skills now more than ever before. These Kimochis are a fun and low stakes way to students to check in with themselves and me as their teacher. Many students don't share their emotions - often leading them to keep things inside until it's too difficult. This activity can assist with sharing those thoughts.
Social emotional learning provides students skills and a space to promote content area learning.
It's difficult to teach science skills if students are not prepared personally or emotionally. Having a way to incorporate SEL is vital to my students!
