Finding, Mining, and Teaching Texts that Celebrate Multiple Intelligences

My Project

To sharpen middle school literacy skills while teaching historical inquiry to underrepresented students in a way that connects to the personal lives of each student, the project celebrates absent narratives, underrepresented histories, and multiple intelligences while underscoring the five characteristics of effective structured literacy teaching.

The project is designed to embrace and celebrate each student's multiple intelligence or pursuit of uncommon joy.

The students will learn how to find and teach texts that detail the lives of famous and historical people who were the first People of Color to break the barriers in a variety of pastimes that remain popular to this day. Each student will focus on those pioneers that share the same multiple intelligences as the student. The students will highlight these innovators by creating 3D art pieces and creative writing pieces that summarize each person's life.

The teacher will use these biographies to teach historical inquiry and effective structured literacy teaching highlighted activities like engaging in the 5 C's of Historical Knowledge including Causes, Change, Consequence, Contestability and Continuity of each trailblazer. We will also explore each historical figure's motives and significance of his life.
