My Students
Our district is very small with only two schools in it, and our school has approximately 900 students total, but we are growing quickly.
We live just a few blocks away from the Pacific coast.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds and family structures. They are all full of life and have a huge love of learning! Our students work hard, have huge dreams, and deserve an education that not only consists of textbooks but also technology with hands-on learning, magazines, newspapers, and so much more.
My Project
My students are asking for a class set of the novel, Home of the Brave, so they can really dig deep into our curriculum. Currently, I have to read aloud the book to my students and teach from it. They are unable to look back in the novel to find evidence, to re-read, or to use quotes.
This isn't just a book used to teach standards, but also a book to teach empathy, compassion, the gift of kindness, and hope.
It helps them to think about their own life and times when maybe they have lost hope. Also, by having the book in front of them, students can follow along while I read, which helps with fluency and comprehension. Students are able to go back into the text to help them find answers to questions or to prove their opinion, and they are able to use the text to help them with their writing for cross-curricular instruction.
