My Students
Our school is located north of Phoenix in Anthem, Arizona, and our students have varied backgrounds. As 5th Graders, they are learning about the world around them.
As we study natural disasters around the world, my students will become more aware of the impact natural disasters have on people and begin thinking of ways they can help others outside of their local community.
I'd like for my students to see that people around the world face challenges that require others to lend a helping hand. When we understand the needs of others around the world, we can all become stronger global citizens.
My Project
I am requesting 15 copies (shared class set) of a remarkable story that is a tribute to the beauty and resilience of Haiti and its people. Students will share copies so they can experience and discuss the story together.
Eight Days: A Story of Haiti tells of a young boy named Junior who was trapped by rubble for eight days and used his imagination for comfort.
My goal is for my students to better understand the power of love, hope, and determination. Through this understanding, my students can begin thinking of ways they can help others in times of need.
