Have you ever wondered what it would be like to not be able to easily ask for things, make requests, describe your emotions, or simply say hello? Many students in my classroom have communication deficits but by donating to this project, YOU can help them to find their voice!
My classroom has students that have all been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder which hinders their cognitive, developmental and communicative abilities.
These students are in a substantially separate setting that gives them the chance to receive a special education, 1:1 learning and much differentiated instruction to meet their needs. The students range around 3 years old and many have just been diagnosed. Their families are struggling with the diagnosis and as teachers we are trying very hard to transition both parents and students in to a new routine, schedule, and way of living that will benefit their child. Many children with autism have difficulty communicating their wants and needs and emotions. I work in a public school in a low income area that does not get much funding for materials or resources that these students need to be successful. Let's work together to give these kids their voice so that they can more easily communicate their everyday needs!
My Project
My students will be able to use the iPads individually and in small groups by using visuals, keypad and sound to promote communication. Being able to use a device to aide their communication could make a huge difference in their everyday success and learning. Our class has one iPad now but would greatly benefit from 2 additional iPads to be used among the 9 students in the classroom. Many of the education applications on the iPad can help students to learn their names, understand their emotions, recognize and spell using letters, teach them about safety, etc. The possibilities are endless! For many of these students they have a hard time expressing what they want to say and by using an alternative device such as the iPad they will more likely be able to learn vocabulary, functional skills, daily living skills, and social skills .
By donating to this project these iPads will help these students to find a mode of communication that will help them to express themselves.
We can use these iPads as educational resources, communication aides, and leisure time for the students to enjoy. These iPads could help these students and so many more in the future. Please consider donating to this wonderful cause for these little ones and their future!
