My Students
Our school population is diverse in many different terms from their ethnicity, neighborhood, upbringing, culture, and so much more. In the past 3-4 years, the students have experienced 4 different music teachers, curriculum, classrooms, and personalities. Despite this, my students have been more than willing to try new things and push the boundaries of their musical growth.
My students are some of the most resilient and adaptive students I've experienced who have eagerly committed themselves expansion of traditional music boundaries by taking part in the introduction of bucket drums, recorders, and continuation of ukuleles.
Once in fifth grade, students have the option to join our Summit Starters, the beginning fifth grade band. We work in a small classroom, but maintain our big goals. Students are using these instruments to learn more about the creation, practice, and internalization of music. These tools will help to encourage them in the belief that music is for everyone and each of them are capable.
My Project
Due to the size of my classroom, we have limited space for seating and seating storage. Traditional classroom chairs are not an option when being stored in our school gymnasium and short 45-minute class periods for specials. By having stackable, easy-to-store stools available to each student we will save time, effort, and frustration in our development and learning of classroom curricula. Students in grades 3-5 will benefit greatly from this resource as we have been using 5-gallon buckets as chairs - a re-purposed material as our third-grade classes use these as instruments. To maintain the integrity of our 5-gallon buckets, ensure proper playing technique and habits, and overall comfort in the classroom, each student will have a more enjoyable time where they can feel successful in the music classroom.
