Finding a Solution for Pollution

My students need science books/materials to grow an indoor garden such as 6 scopes, slides, books, & boards to gather data on the effects of pollution on plant growth.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Water and air, the two essential fluids on which all life depends, have become global garbage cans," ~Jacques-Yves Cousteau once said. At times, it does appear that they have become global garbage cans. Please help me teach my students on how pollution affects a plant's life cycle.

I work with a large culturally and linguistically diverse group of learners.

I work with students with autism, students with specific learning disabilities, speech and language impairments, and students who may benefit from small group interventions. Close to 90% of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, and about 60% of our students are English language learners.

My Project

This project was inspired by Planting Detroit Solutions for Pollution written by Ms. Vansickle. My students will gather information about the plant cycle and pollution by reading a variety of science books. They will make predictions about the effects of pollution on plant growth. They will conduct hands-on experiments to find out the effects of pollution on plant growth by planting their own plants. Throughout this process my students will draw their observations/conclusions on their own book. They will be given a chance to evaluate, then draw/label the stages of the life cycle of a plant. They will question why a plant grows more or less with/without water, air, or soil pollution. My students will have an opportunity to observe and collect data by using magnifying tools, slides, microscopes, and PH strips to observe their plants. Then, they will research ways to reduce pollution. Afterwards, they will create tri-fold poster presentations and present them to their peers.

Please help my students by contributing to science books/materials to grow an indoor garden such as 6 scopes, slides, blank books, & boards to gather data on the effects pollution has on plant growth.

These resources will help my students have a better understanding of the effects of pollution. These skills are important for my students to become higher level thinkers and problem solvers.
